Lisbon Treaty can be tabled after Irish vote
Beijing News.Net Saturday 3rd October, 2009
Irish voters have approved the European Union’s Lisbon Treaty.
After a second referendum, 67.13 percent of Irish voters said “Yes to the treaty.
Voting observers have said the reason for the turnaround in sentiment might have been a much higher voter response.
Nationwide turnout was 59 percent, compared with the 51 percent in the first referendum.
In June, the EU took a major step in agreeing to provide Ireland with legally binding guarantees to overcome voters’ misgivings.
The higher turnout at the Irish polls shows strong backing for the treaty, which is designed to streamline the EU’s decision-making process.
The treaty will bring reforms to Ireland in the areas of climate change, cross-border crime and economic rules.
Ireland is the only country that held a public ballot on the EU reform treaty. Email this story to a friend
