Nigeria unhappy with airport scans on its citizens

Beijing News.Net
Monday 4th January, 2010

Nigeria has condemned as unfair tougher screening of passengers wanting to fly to the US.

The country has been singled out for special checks at US airports, along with some other nations whose citizens will be subject to special body searches and luggage checks.

Four other African countries, Algeria, Libya, Somalia and Sudan, will also be obliged to go through similar security scans.

Other countries subject to the rules are: Cuba, Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

The Nigerian government has said the airport rules, brought in after a Nigerian man allegedly tried to blow up a US plane, discriminate against 150 million Nigerians.

While bomb suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is from Nigeria, the Nigerian government has been at pains to point out he was not recruited or trained in Nigeria.
