Gov't secures 25 million Sinovac vaccine doses for 2021

QUEZON CITY, March 1 (PIA) - The government has secured 25 million doses of the Sinovac vaccine for 2021, Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Harry Roque Jr. said.

"Twenty-five million doses po ang ating sinecure na Sinovac vaccine at ito'y inaasahan nating na ma-roll out bago matapos ang taong 2021 (We have secured 25 million doses of the Sinovac vaccine, which are expected for roll out before the year 2021 ends,)" Roque said during the press briefing at the UP-PGH as the Philippines' national vaccination program started today, March 1, 2021.

He enumerated higher public officials of different countries who were already inoculated with the same vaccine, such as the President and Vice-President of Indonesia, Chief Executive of Hongkong, and Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister of Thailand. He added that the Turkey President has also been vaccinated and more than 5 million Turks started its vaccination in January this year, while 3.2 million people were vaccinated in Chile beginning February 3.

Meanwhile, vaccine Czar Secretary Carlito G. Galvez, Jr. said the country's procurement of vaccines will start this March since the one rolled out today were donation by the Chinese government.

In the meantime, he explained that the arrival of AstraZeneca vaccines was delayed due to acute global shortages and logistic challenges.

Following the President's directive (PRRD) that vaccination must not be concentrated only in one area, Galvez committed and hoped that all available vaccines would be administered to all health workers nationwide by the end of March. (PIA Central/IDPD)
