BEIJING, China: Retailer H&M got caught in the crosshairs of regulators from China who insisted they correct a map on the clothing retailer firm's website, according to media reports on Apr 2.

H&M drew criticism from the Chinese government recently over its statement in 2020 regarding alleged human rights violations in Xinjiang Province.

The Shanghai city government later instructed H&M to tweak a 'problematic map of China,' according to ABC News.

Drawing reference to the government of Shanghai's statement, ABC News stated that China's netizens had complained to those managing the Hennes & Mauritz AB website, and instructions were issued by the Shanghai municipal bureau of planning and natural resources on making the changes to the map.

The Wall Street Journal quoted top Internet watchdog, the Cyberspace Administration of China's Shanghai arm, stating that the Swedish firm's website operating team had acted accordingly to handle the matter.

H&M vowed last week to strive to recoup Chinese trust, after its remark last year on boycotting cotton produced in Xinjiang reemerged on social media.

H&M, in its remarks, voiced its apprehensions over forced labor, which is rampant in Xinjiang, and asserted it would no longer purchase cotton grown in that region.

Chinese media had called for Chinese boycotts of Swedish multinational retailer H&M, sports apparel powerhouses Nike and Adidas; New Balance; Burberry and others who have voiced concerns or pledged not to use supply chain components produced in Xinjiang.
