SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - Stocks in Japan and Australia were sold off sharply on Friday.
In China, shares made a modest gain.
At the close on Friday, the Nikkei 225 was down 681.59 points or 2.31 percent at 28,771.07, a one-month low,
The Australian All Ordinaries shed 143.10 points or 1.88 percent to 7,486.60.
The Hang Seng in Hong Kong slipped 87.86 points or 0.36 percent to 24,575.64.
In China, the Shanghai Composite closed ahead 31.81 points or 0.90 percent at 3,568.17.
The U.S. dollar was mostly higher. The euro however was little changed at 1.1586, around the close in Sydney on Friday.
The British pound sank to 1.3452. The Japanese yen. was little moved at 111.24. The Swiss franc was unchanged at 0.9312.
The Canadian dollar weakened to 1.2727. The Australian dollar slipped to 0.7205. The New Zealand dollar slumped to 0.6888.
Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones tumbled 546.80 points or 1.59 percent to 33,843.92.
The Standard and Poor's 500 declined 51.92 points or 1.19 percent to 4,307.54.
The Nasdaq Composite dropped 63.86 points or 0.44 percent to 14,448.58.
