Hang Seng dives over China Evergrande jitters

SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - Stocks in Asia were mixed on Monday, rising in China and Australia, but falling sharply in Japan and Hong Kong.

At the close on Monday, the Nikkei 225 in Japan was down 326.18 points or 1.13 percent at 28,444.89.

In China, the Shanghai Composite advanced 31.88 points or 0.90 percent to 3,568.17.

The Australian All Ordinaries climbed 90.20 points or 1.20 percent to 7,576.80.

The Hang Seng in Hong Kong was the worst performer. The key index shed 539.27 points or 2.19 percent to close Monday at 24,036.37.

On foreign exchange markets, the euro inched up to 1.1604. The British pound was stronger at 1.3549. The Japanese yen was little changed at 111.00. The Swiss franc was little changed at .9301.

The Canadian dollar was a fraction stronger at 1.2627. The Australian dollar nudged up to 0.7269. The New Zealand dollar rose to 0.6944.
